Program Description

Narrative: This program, entitled Permaculture on Maui, is designed to explore various permaculture and sustainable farming practices in a tropical climate. In this program, the student will travel to Maui and live and work on four different farms: Haiku Aina Permaculture Initiative, Pono Grown Farm Center, Whispering Winds Bamboo Cooperative, and Hale Akua Garden Farm and Permaculture Center. The student will attend daily lectures and participate in hands-on projects at each of these locations. Readings will include Introduction to Permaculture by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, and Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual by Bill Mollison. The student will submit weekly blog posts and submit a final permaculture design project. Through this work, the student will earn her Permaculture Design Certification. The student will then complete a five week internship applying this permaculture and sustainable farming knowledge at Hale Akua Garden Farm and Permaculture Center.

 

Learning objective Activity Deliverable
 To learn the theoretical principles and applications of permaculture.  I will read books, attend lectures, and write two five page papers to learn the theory.  I will submit two five page papers.
 To learn the theoretical principles and applications of sustainable tropical agriculture.  I will participate in hands-on projects and complete a five week internship with Hale Akua Garden Farm and Permaculture Center.  I will complete a final permaculture design project and submit it for review.
I will keep a weekly blog detailing my activities and learning. I will submit weekly blog posts for review.
