  • Lot’s of Donald Duk vibes.
Lovey is ashamed of the way she talks and looks much like Donald was. Lovey wants to have a Haole name and live the rich white life. Both Lovey and Donald rejected their culture and aspired to be something they weren’t and something they never would be.
Another was the white teacher, the students don’t talk right and if they don’t they won’t be anything.
  • I was getting some Forgotten Country vibes from the story. The Going back to bring some soil for the father when he went blind.
The Japanese man earlier in the book whose only possessions from japan was the box of soil. It isn’t always straight needing to be there. Just having something from home can connect you to it. And when the ruling class is suppressing any connection to home, problems arise.
  • Jerry and Lovey’s relationship was really interesting. The constant homophobia, sexism, and just all around behavior of many of the characters made the reading feel real. Many of the things said were things I can recall hearing or seeing other children doing many years ago.
  • Them getting the cow and naming it bully was perfect. The fact that once they were all reminded that they were eating someone one who had become part of the family no one could carry though. I really like that.
  • Lovey and all of her animals and the pants she makes.
Her father made everything himself and Lovey makes him a vest and then the pants.
Father always has some sort of side job ready to make some extra money. Jerry and Lovey always have a plan to make more money as well.
  • The native birds coming back to haunt you if you kill them
    The Ghost Eye
  • Larry is a dick, all there is to say.
Crystals suicide was sad as hell.

Really enjoyed this film. Opened my eyes into a part of Hawaiian culture I never knew existed.

  • Major Themes
    Fluidity and hybridity of identity
    Preservation and evolution of culture
  • Culture does not need to stay in the past, needs to evolve along with the rest of the world.
  • Hawaiian culture was repressed, only recently have Hawaiians been allowed to practice their culture.
  • Bravado and machismo jealousy well in display in the film.
  • Poor but free
  • A look into being trans through a non western lens. This film is fantastic.
  • That final performance gave me goosebumps
Not just fighting for Hawaiian culture but all cultures.
