We watched Mississippi Masala and it was very powerful! It was amazing to see just how easy the tables turn or go in favor of depending on the situation. The different ethnicity’s were very blatantly exaggerated and often contradictory. This is certainly nothing new.
Even though this film was made in 1992 it is still very relevant. I can see many of the scenes from the movie still taking place in 2017. I would like to say that we have evolved drastically, but we have not. Prejudice is alive and well. I am shocked and saddened that after twenty five years later we have barely made a dent in equality.
After having read, from Apu to Master of None: how US pop culture tuned into the south Asian experience, I really understood that things have changed, but not as much as they need to. I also had to take a hard look at myself and re-evaluate comedy and the costs involved. This article was very eye opening and saddening at the same time. In this day and time I thought that we would have come a lot farther than we have.
Both the article and the movie have one message in common and that is that we need to work harder to achieve equality. Science proves that most of us have many different ethnic markers in our DNA, so why is everyone so fixated on skin color? We have gained so much knowledge and yet we move so slowly at evolving into a much more accepting and kind united race….
