I found the short film “Fish Bowl”, to be very much like the book. The teacher in the short film is just as bad as what I imagined while reading the book. It was almost painful to watch. The cruelty to children of a different ethnicity is astounding. I know it happened because my father was a victim of this as well. I would say he was very resistant just like Lovey.
Between the book and the movies we watched. I was able to associate and connect the dots to the coming of age themes present. Growing up is hard enough, now add on differences between indigenous people and those of immigrant families. Instead of appreciating differences they are pointed out in very cruel ways. Kids are definitely cruel.
The one thing that is a constant in all of the books and movies that we have viewed is conflict, discrimination and discord. This is not something that is limited to the readings in class or the movies we viewed, this is life. Every coming of age period is a very tough time for kids to endure. Add in the integration of different ethnic groups and that just adds more targets.
