Anime: Perhaps the most underrated medium

“I believe that with anime the goal is to make a great product first and then make money off of it. With Hollywood it’s about having a sure fire box office hit and then try to make it good. Make something for mass consumption.”

This is my biggest gripe with the current state of Hollywood. Hollywood has lost track of what made movies good and instead have switched to a completely capitalistic profit machine. Every year less and less people turn out to actual movie premiers and are opting to wait for video or streaming.

In anime, they take the ‘cool rule’ which is make everything cool, and have turned it into an artform. The one thing immediately recognizable to everyone is anime’s inherent coolness and style. Every character and moment is overflowing with coolness, but at the other end of the spectrum, captialism and has taken hold of anime has been currently exploiting anime for it’s inherent coolness.

Meanwhile Hollywood is becoming less and less original, sticking to tried and true formulas in attempts fill the box offices. No longer are filmmakers taking risks, instead we have no superhero films and tired B list ideas from directors who are looking for a way out.
