Annotated Bibliography

This week I finished and turned in my annotated bibliography. In my paper I plan to write about music as a metaphorical home of mine, and because this class is about APIA pop-culture, I want to talk specifically about how Japanese and American music have influenced one another. For example, the Japanese metal band Dir en grey makes music that blends more traditional Japanese rock music (j-rock) with American-born genres like progressive metal, death metal and metalcore. The way the band members dress on stage is very flamboyant as they belong to a Japanese music scene called visual-kei. Visual-kei has roots in American glam rock/metal but is even more androgynous and is often aesthetically influenced by things like anime and horror films. This is one example of a band that is a product of the cultural crosscurrents between the United States and Japan. The five sources I chose to write about in my annotated bibliography are as follows:

Philosophy, Music, and Emotion by Geoffrey Madell

World Music: A Global Journey by Terry E. Miller and Andrew C. Shahriari

Composing Japanese Musical Modernity by Bonnie C. Wade

Music in Japan by Bonnie C. Wade

Metal Rules the Globe by Jeremy Wallach

Using these and other sources I will write my first draft of my paper and hand it in this coming Tuesday.
