Week 8 Notes

5/21/2019  

The Beautiful Land 

  • People on a ship, in line for food, gets rejected 
  • Ling tells Tam that America is nice, clean, they pay for cleaners 
  • Man in purple shirt says no pay me = no food for them 
  • Captain of ship tells Binh he will always be out of place 
  • Offers Binh a job, Ling wants to be a singer 
  • Binh catches a fish, polishes captain’s shoes as a job, captain dislikes an independent mind 
  • Turbulent waves, storm affects water tank, rice is wet and rotted, half rations, more passengers die 
  • Food being used as bet for games 
  • Captain offers Binh something new, Binh chooses to go to America still, Tam is sick 
  • Binh at water tank, discovered by captain, called out for stealing, it’s for the sick 
  • Tam dies, succumbs to sickness, Ling crying 
  • Binh wants games to stop, plays the game, radio picks up station, arrival to America 
  • Disguised food trucks pick up passengers 
  • Chinatown, New York City, Binh works at restaurant, Ling sings at bar, jeered by crowd 
  • Bunkbeds underneath the subway 
  • Delivery boy, poster of Texas, never going there by sending earnings to Vietnam 
  • Reminded of father in Texas, doesn’t want to wait anymore, lets Ling go 
  • Greed is good, is about getting to fly to America for free if there is a GI father, gets mad (invalidates the suffering of the boat trip), hitchhikes to Texas 
  • Binh sees a man with a missing arm, gets a ride, hitchhikes with Mexicans who mistake Binh for one of them 
  • Arrives at his father’s house, lady stopped knowing Steve Cole 20 years ago 
  • Lady tells Binh that Steve is in Sweetwater, Binh tells the lady about relation to Steve 
  • Goes to ranch, offers to work, $2/hr not a cent more, Binh meets his father, is ignored 
  • Blind? Steve offers sleeping bag, Steve feels bad about Vietnam due to having good memories 
  • Steve talks about wife, left because he felt that wife didn’t need a blind man to care after as well 
  • Binh serves pho, Steve asks Binh why he came to America 
  • Photo of Ben with parents, cuts Steve’s hair, mother worked as barber

Project: Move/add blurb about Asian American connection, bring in Monster Hunter World earlier 

Concept = HYBRIDITY 

Color and saturation against muted/dull coloration, realistic aesthetic vs stylized

Graphics, Western games against Asian games

The barrier of entry – equate to language barrier

Final Thoughts: Vietnamese American 

  • Operation Babylift brought many children to the U.S, but not parents, families separated 
  • The mass migration of Vietnamese via boat, harsh journey equivalent to the Atlantic Slave Trade 
  • The first wave of Vietnamese migrants received more support compared to later waves 
  • Vietnamese cuisine is heavily inspired by French cuisine 
  • The dialogue in the reading had no quotation marks, perhaps infers to internal dialogue rather than external speech
