Jo Koy is a Filipino-American stand-up comedian. I was introduced to him by my dad but at the time I didn’t know he was Filipino. He is an amazing comedian, putting a Filipino perspective on growing up, racism and his relationships with others. In his show in Seattle, he talks about his experience with his mom growing up with her own remedies and how she reacted to his sister’s fiancee being black.
I grew up with comedians like Gabriel Iglesias, Chris Rock, and Dave Chapelle and was later introduced to other comedians like Trevor Noah, Ronnie Cheng and Kavin Jay. I grew up with humor that talked about race relations and stereotypes because that was the stuff that surrounded my family and friends. It is nice to see a new perspective from a new comedian (Who has been around awhile, but is getting more and more popular) and to see the crowd eat up his material about his life shows just how good his comedy can be.

I loved the comedians you showed the class – especially Jo Koy! I also appreciated how you gave a disclaimer to the class. Nice job on your presentation!

I really enjoyed your presentation on the importance of comedy and how it can be a way to address racism in a way that everyone can laugh about and make it more approachable.

On top of the examples you showed of Jo Koy, he was a great example for your project topic. In terms of sensitive material, these videos had a good balance of racial jokes vs. personal jokes. In the end, I’ll definitely have to check this guy out more.

Hi Anthony,
My family’s choice of comedy was watching George Lopez after school and on Sunday mornings. It never really clicked with me why they chose it until I was older. This afternoon I showed the videos you presented in class to my boyfriend. We loved him and now have a new name to look out for.

Your presentation with Jo Koy really entertained me. As an aside, the segment about Vick’s Vapour Rub? That part I grew up with being true. I really did enjoy that statement you made about humor enabling a safe space to talk about issues, we laugh because it’s true after all.
