Monty Oum was an animator at rooster teeth. He grew up in Rhode Island, dropped out of high school and self taught himself how to render and animate 3D models. His first major project was Haloid , combining Master Chief and Samus in an all out battle. He then created the series Dead Fantasy which attracted numerous video game companies where he was an animator for Namco Bandai for the Afro Samurai game. Finding out that he didn’t like the games industry, he was hired by Rooster Teeth and increased the animation production of Red vs. Blue and then created one of Rooster Teeth’s prime shows RWBY. He died at the age of 33 in February 2015.

Monty was heavily influenced by video games, but also dance, martial arts, and Hong Kong action. He is Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Cambodian. He traded in his education to pursue his dreams and didn’t forgo his interests for monetary gain. He did have pragmatic style of work in which creates highly detailed fast pace animation. He was even described as robotic by most of his co-workers. Overall, he breaks the stereotype as the model minority while not sacrificing the background he grew up in.
