For my final project, I will be investigating how American graffiti has influenced Asian artwork and vice versa. I will be exploring the cross currents that started in the New York Subway tunnels in the 80’s, and has become a world wide phenomena. Looking at Asian American and Asian Artists will be part of my research, but I will also be looking at the history of graffiti and street as a baseline in my study. The reason I am doing not only Asian American work, is because I am more interested in the exchange of practice and ideas between the different groups. Asian and American combined together form Asian American, it is not as limiting as a term of “Asian born in America”. I intend to showcase the change from one style of work, and how the influences of different cultures have diversified the expression that is plastered upon the walls.

Cool Topic! It’s interesting to think about the media that would allow for the cross currents of street art. I’m assuming it’s not very common for street artists to cross continents to see each others work.
Does it travel through music videos? or mostly the internet nowadays. Do street artists take influence from other aspects of each others culture?

I like what you mentioned about art being a conversation between multiple cultures. It’s so influential and what styles get adopted, especially in the world of graffiti, is a greater look into the aspects of popular art forms. I’m excited for you to elaborate on all of this.
