D&R: Lucy Liu Speaks Out For More Diversity at Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lucy Liu Speaks Out For More Diversity at Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lucy Liu when accepting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

“Sometimes people talk about my mainstream successes as groundbreaking for an Asian, but Asians have been making movies for a long time. They just weren’t making them here because we weren’t yet invited to the table. I was lucky that trailblazers, like Anna May Wong and Bruce Lee, came before me. if my body of work somehow helped bridge the gap between stereotypical roles, first given to Anna May, and mainstream success today, I am thrilled to have been part of that process.”

This Quote of her speech really resonated with me as I am doing my project on Bruce Lee. I have also been delving into the Asian American’s who are on the walk of fame for Fridays presentation on Chinese Americans.

This list is old, but in 2011 CNN made a list of minorities on the walk of fame.

https://www.cnn.com/2011/11/08/showbiz/hollywood-walk-of-fame-list/index.html

The number of Asian’s on the list is the smallest as of 2011.

10 Asians.

120 African Americans.

79 Hispanics.

Hopefully, the numbers of Asians will continue to rise after Lucy Liu.

I really like her quote “… but Asians have been making movies for a long time. They just weren’t making them here because we weren’t yet invited to the table.” It does enough to inform the general public as well as raising awareness towards the issue. Recognition is important in order to get the point across and I’m glad to see that she is being honored.
