Why did it take so long to have an all-Asian cast for a movie between The Joy Luck Club and Crazy Rich Asians? That question asked in a New York Times article looking at that very question. Normally Asian movie roles are for token parts or as racial stereotypes. For this movie, Asian actors would be able to portray all the different parts of a movie. There were some questions regarding the actors in this movie, “But as roles were considered and cast, the filmmakers contended with questions about identity amid the Asian diaspora. Could an Asian play an Asian-American? Could a Malaysian play a Singaporean? And what about an Asian guy with a white mom or dad — could he even be in the running?” These are important questions to consider when making a movie as to portray all cultures accurately. Of course, there was some suggestions for white actors, “As it turns out, there were questions about casting even before the book hit stores. Mr. Kwan said a producer who wanted to option the book had suggested that he make Rachel white. Mr. Kwan refused. “It didn’t surprise me,” said Constance Wu, the Chinese-American actress who ultimately secured the role and who has been a vocal critic of Hollywood whitewashing. “I’m just glad that Kevin stuck to his guns. It takes a lot of courage to say no to something, especially if you’re scared that everything might slip away if you don’t say yes.”” I feel like there is a lack of all Asian cast in movies because so many people feel like a white person playing a role of an Asian is no problem or that all movies must have at least some actors or actresses who are white. It was nice to have a movie where all the actors were Asian and I feel like more movies should be made with diverse casts that do not always have to have white actors in them.

While there is the apparent “whitewashing” in films, there are also instances where Asian character will be replaced with another person of color who is not Asian. There is also the controversy of Memoir of a Geisha, where the geisha, who are supposed to be Japanese, were played by Chinese actors which upset a lot of the Japanese audience.
I do admit it is rather strange that the movies like Better Luck Tomorrow and Good Luck Club are some of the very few bigger American movies with a huge Asian American cast. While I have not seen this movie, anyone can tell you it is definitely a big step in the right direction.
