May is Asian American and Pacific Islander History month, and to celebrate I have compiled a list of events that will be happening in our area that you are more than welcome to attend!

Free Asia Talks: Art and engagement in early postwar Japan (FREE with RSVP)

• May 16th, 2019 at The Seattle Art Museum
• Justin Jesty joins us to discuss his newest book, “Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan,” where he reframes the history of art and its politics in Japan post-1945. It centers on a group of social realists on the radical left, a liberal arts education movement, and a regional avant-garde group split between ambition and local loyalty.bit.ly/AsiaTalksPostwarJapanAbout the Presenter

  Justin Jesty is Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington. He is an author in Japanese of several catalog exhibitions for the Meguro Museum of Art and of articles in the Nishi Nihon Shinbun and Gendai Shiso (Contemporary Thought), and author in English of articles in Japan Forum and Art in America.

  APIDA Queer Film Shorts
  Wednesday, May 22 // 5:30- 7pm
  Join us for a series of short films created by Larry Tung, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, and journalist in New York City. A native of Taiwan, he holds an M.F.A. in TV Production from Brooklyn College and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University. Tung’s films focus on social justice and human rights issues. They have been featured in more than 40 film festivals around the world.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Event (FREE)

• UW Tacoma‘s Creative Writing program, in partnership with the CAC Division, the SHS Division, and UWT CEI are proud to be hosting Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Literary Events featuring the award-winning writers, Kristiana Kahakauwila and Lee Herrick.
