OLYMPIA, Wash. – Taking the pitch for the final time at home, the Evergreen Geoducks earned their first win of 2012, defeating the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 2-0, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
After a scoreless first half that saw EOU outshoot Evergreen, 7-3, the Geoducks went on the offensive in the second half and it paid off. The Geoducks took the lead in the 73rd minute as junior Bianca Flores (Yakima, Wash./Yakima Valley CC) dribbled up the right and shot from about 25 yards out to beat EOU keeper Kailey Moss.
After the Mounties pressed forward and looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes, the Geoducks were able to take advantage of the extra space on offense as Sophie Krauza (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) crossed in a ball to Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS), who chipped it over Moss’s head for the 2-0 win.
Outshooting EOU 10-3 in the second half, the Geoducks finished with 13-10 advantage on shots. Moss made four saves for the Mounties while Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) made three stops to collect the shutout.
The Geoducks hit the road next week in the final weekend of play. Evergreen will head to Portland, Ore. to take on Warner Pacific on Friday at David Douglas High School.
