OLYMPIA, Wash. – Building an early lead, the Southern Oregon Raiders held on for a 3-1 win over the Evergreen Geoducks in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Thursday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
The Raiders (9-4-3, 5-2-1 CCC) got on the board in just the fourth minute as Jacquie Galvez sent a corner into the box and Chloe Welch gained possession before scoring her second goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. SOU doubled the advantage in the 21st minute as Galvez unleashed a long-distance try from about 30 yards out that slipped past Evergreen (3-10-0, 2-6-0 CCC) keeper Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS/Shoreline CC) for the 2-0 halftime lead.
The Evergreen defense stayed strong for much of the second half but Southern Oregon was able to get another score in the 76th minute as Kendra Madaras-Kelly fed in a ball to Megan McArthur, who beat MacKenzie on the dribbled and finished on an open net for the 3-0 lead.
All was not lost for the Geoducks, who started a comeback in the 82nd minute on a goal by Delaney Smith (Dupont, Wash./Steilacoom HS/Tacoma CC) that snuck right inside the far post after a pass from Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS). Unfortunately for Evergreen, the comeback attempt would end there as SOU earned the 3-1 win.
Southern Oregon held a 22-12 advantage on shots, including 10 on goal, compared with four for Evergreen. The game was relatively clean with just 13 fouls called and only one caution shown.
The Geoducks wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they play host to Oregon Tech on Senior Day. First kick with the Hustlin’ Owls is set for 1 p.m. on Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
