OLYMPIA, Wash. – Playing on the road for the first time in 2012, the Evergreen Geoducks found a way to win for the fourth straight match, defeating the Warner Pacific Knights, 2-1, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match on Saturday at David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore.
The Geoducks (4-3-0, 4-0-0 CCC) fell behind almost immediately as the Knights (3-5-0, 2-2-0 CCC) scored a second minute goal following the corner kick by Almir Celebic that was put in from point blank by Alberto Casas.
Evergreen evened things up in the 27th minute as freshman phenom Willie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) did it yet again, scoring his sixth goal of the year on the assist by Joseph Ademofe (Ifon, Nigeria/Shoreline CC) to even things up at 1-1.
With just two minutes left in the first half, the Geoducks took their first lead of the match following a bit of miscommunication by the Knights as a WPC defender attempted to pass the ball back to the keeper but instead put the ball into the net for an own goal.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half as the teams combined for seven shots on goal in the second half but neither would score again as Evergreen moved to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since joining the Cascade Conference.
Collin Harlow (Kirkland, Wash./Shoreline CC) won his fourth straight match as well, making five saves to finish a strong week in goal.
First place will be on the line on Tuesday when Evergreen heads back down to Portland to face off against Concordia (Ore.) beginning at 6 p.m. at Hilken Community Stadium.
Way to go team! This is the start of a new era for Geoduck soccer! Siphons high!
