Maria Bastaki is a faculty member at The Evergreen State College since September 2005. She has been teaching Toxicology, Pharmacology, Environmental Health, Risk Assessment and Statistics in the Master’s Program in Environmental Studies and in the undergraduate curriculum.

Student Research
The following student research projects were funded by The Evergreen Student Foundation.
In winter of 2009 Leah Fishman, an Evergreen senior received funding for her successful research proposal. She proposed to study the effect of suspected endocrine disrupters found in personal care products on the estrogenic response of MCF7 cells in vitro. The title of her project is “A Study of The Estrogenic Affects of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane on The Proliferation of Human Breast Adenocarcinoma Cells MCF-7” and is funded in the amount of $900.00.
In the spring of 2008 two other Evergreen seniors, Stephanie Blair and Brendan O’Brien, received funding for their successful research proposals!
Stephanie proposed to study endocrine disrupters using an in vitro system of estrogen receptors obtained from cell extracts of breast cancer cells , MCF-7. The title of her project is “In vitro Investigation of Environmental Endocrine Disrupters” and is funded in the amount of $500.00
Brendan proposed to study the presence of endocrine disrupters in the effluent of a local wastewater treatment facility in Olympia, WA, using qualitative and quantitative analytical methods, specifically GC/MS. The title of his project is “Qualitative and quantitative analysis of wastewater for endocrine disrupting contaminants in Thurston County” and is funded for the amount of $1,000.

Maria’s interview on the Greek magazine for Pharmacists “Farmakeftikos Kosmos” (Pharmaceutical World), published in the December 2007 issue. Discussion on the issues of pharmaceutical waste and disposal of unused drugs as a challenge and an opportunity for innovation on how we use and handle pharmaceutical substances – a cross talk between pharmaceuticals and environmental toxicology.
