Program Description

In this quarter the student will explore a possibility of placing Donna Haraway and David Hume in conversation with each other. David Hume was a philosopher of the Scottish enlightenment. While Donna Haraway is a Distinguished American Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness Department and Feminist Studies Department at the University of California. These two can never have a discussion upon their own impetus, but it is a conversation that should be explored. The aim is to come up with and communicate a thinking figure, by using elements of both, primarily Donna Haraway’s thinking figure concept and David Hume’s theories about how beliefs shape a person’s perceptions and actions. This thinking figure will be able to affect the underlying reactive patterns of a person by addressing the underlying belief structures. Human beings are patterns created by beliefs and memories. The student will experience the thinking figure and experiment with it for a quarter to see if it works to affect the underlying reactive patterns.

Learning how to create an art gallery exhibit is necessary in order to make the next step towards communicating a complex idea via by pattern language.

In order to share the spirit of these two great thinkers, in conversation with each other, merchandise will be created to go along with the art gallery exhibit. The net profits will be going to the Student Art Gallery.

By the end of the quarter the student will have learned:what it takes to make art that communicates a multipurpose thinking tool, how to put an art gallery exhibit together, and how to publicize and merchandise for an art show.
