Over the last couple of weeks we have been experiencing some performance problems with the student email system. The major symptom is that mailboxes are slow to initially load. This happens using web mail and outlook, on and off campus. The Network Services team has been working with the staff in Academic Computing to determine the specific circumstances and established monitoring points within the system to track down the root of the problem.

Hi James, thanks for answering. I thought I’d pass along something that came in internally from Beth around this issue;
We have been having some problems with our mail servers the last few weeks. The two most obvious symptoms have been:
1. Access to student mail via OWA and Outlook has been sporadically slow.
2. Some messages have had significant delays in delivery. This is especially noticeable for messages coming from the outside and passing through our servers.
I did some performance monitoring, and there seemed to be some problems with the mail servers looking up information in our user account database. Examples are the Exchange server queries the location of a user’s mailbox or the membership of a distribution list.
The indicated fix was to create another Active Directory domain controller/global catalog server. I did this. Let me know if anyone experiences more delayed email or slow access problems. Details of any problems are always helpful for troubleshooting.
Please let anyone know in Academic Computing or Network Services if you continue to see problems and thanks Beth for working on this.
