defensive indifference

full enough, the debut full-length by restless upstart prog-punk duo (and this week’s guests) MOON RUNNERS achieves the rare feat of defying easy categorization or reference points in spite of using traditional rock instrumentation. you might recognize jake jones from his daily post at the evergreen library or as drummer for local favorites CHRISTMAS; here he and bandmate danny natter work overtime, sharing guitar, synth, drum + vocal duties and arising quite the clatter. expertly played, lyrically acute + impeccably recorded by nick botka (BIG MEN, CHRISTOPHER FRANCIS + SON) on campus this past summer, full enough is a remarkable effort. the pacing is intriguing; a series of faster songs characterizes the album’s first half, while the B-side gives way to spacier six-string inclinations. the punk cuts are all individually great but it’s during this more explorative latter section when moon runners’ musical aptitude and grasp on dynamics really takes center stage. it’s not always entirely clear where one song ends and the next begins… this is a good thing! with the ever-important first album in the books (download it here; someone press to vinyl, ASAP!) this is certainly a band to look out for. tonight we have the honor of picking jake + danny’s brains about whatever’s clever, and finding out what lies in their record collections… and as you’ll hear on-air sometime after midnight, they rip live. tune in @ 11p PST to 89.3-FM KAOS (olympia) / kaosradio.org (elsewhere)!

DEFENSIVE INDIFFERENCE back-to-school edition tonight w/special guests…

it is my pleasure to introduce those of you in olympia as yet unacquainted with your new neighbors, MILK MUSIC. originally hailing from port townsend (as stated above), this power trio recently relocated to the adjacent room(s) of a certain eastside garage at which you, should you be of the showgoing persuasion, have likely caught raging performances from punk, hardcore and experimental rock acts both local and national this past year. with a fuzzed-out, massively amplified sound evocative (but hardly derivative) of dinosaur jr, hum and the patented PNW flannel-flying aesthetic at large, alex (guitar/vocals), JC (bass) and joe (drums) first rattled oly eardrums at sex/vid’s communal living 12” release show last october and between that and subsequent pizzeria and house shows, anyone aware is no doubt psyched that milk music has chosen to reroute operations to our town. a five-song cassette demo was released this past spring and everyone i know with a copy has warped it to hell by this point, but fortunately for you its sprawling, epically overdriven final track, “pipeline,” can be heard below. recent live shows have seen the band playing even faster and more confidently as they settle into their new digs, and a follow-up recording should be coming down the proverbial pipeline very soon.
