This is your opportunity to tell the English program faculty about yourself formally, including your areas of interest, previous relevant experience, and academic goals. Your letter, which should not exceed two pages, should also indicate how you envision yourself and your work within the strengths of the prospective program of study. As admission is granted to select candidates whom core faculty believe will best be served by UNM’s specific program, it will be helpful for faculty to know why you’re choosing UNM.

I am applying for admittance to UNM’s MFA program in Fall 2019. I am graduating from The Evergreen State College with a Bachelors of Arts with an emphasis in creative writing, where I focused my last two years studying creative nonfiction. I experimented with syntax, played around with my characters, showcased my writing, and tried out different specialties within the creative writing community until I crafted an individual style.

UNM is the next logical step for me to reach my goals: I want to publish a memoir and teach creative writing at the college level. UNM is a school that will prepare me to reach these goals.
While at UNM, I am wanting to work with award winning faculty, especially Gregory Martin. I read Martin’s memoir Stories for Boys and found a kinship amongst the pages. My memoir examines my fathers relationships: both to me and my family members. Martin and I both look at our childhood with a critical lense trying to decipher what is fact and what is fiction.
