About the Program:

The Pierce College Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene (BASDH) program is nationally recognized for consistently graduating skilled and intellectually strong dental hygienists. Our faculty strive for a friendly academic environment that supports and encourages students to perform their best. We have a long history of excellence, with our most recent (2017) Commission on Dental Accreditation self-study resulting in full accreditation without reporting.

Program Mission:

“The Pierce College Dental Hygiene Program prepares learners for the privilege and responsibility to practice in the profession of Dental Hygiene. This preparation focuses on essential competencies for the successful practice of the profession, inspires life-long learning, and promotes service to the community.”

Students learn the practice of dental hygiene in our clinic and classrooms under the close supervision of the BASDH faculty. BASDH students and their patients benefit from the most current and best dental hygiene instruction and technologies, including electronic health records with digital radiography and computer-assisted anesthesia. We encourage wellness, high clinical and academic standards, and lifelong learning. Faculty also teach the district’s five Core Abilities: Critical, Creative, and Reflective Thinking, Responsibility, Information Competence, Effective Communication and Multiculturalism.

This position reports to the Dean of Health and Technology and the Dental Hygiene Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
Facilitating learning and student engagement through teaching an intentionally selected range of courses that support students’ career pathway;
Demonstrating knowledge and application of Dental Hygiene practice, laws, ethics, etc.;
Engaging in curriculum and program development incorporating current educational theories and research;
Analyzing course assessments, evaluations, and data and engaging in continuous improvement of courses based on that analysis in order to advance student achievement of outcomes, success in subsequent courses, and impact on retention and graduation;
Demonstrating multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and creating an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion;
Working within a collaborative and innovative department;
Engaging in district-wide efforts to improve student retention and success;
Incorporating active student learning and appropriate use of technology in the classroom;
Continuously innovating learning experiences (campus, online, hybrid) in response to assessment and evidence/data analysis;
Tailoring curriculum to engage marginalized and oppressed groups;
Utilizing active and inclusive pedagogy;
Creatively designing learning experiences that extend beyond delivering content and assist students in achieving course, program, and degree outcomes, including the college’s five core abilities of Multiculturalism, Critical, Creative and Reflective Thinking, Information Competency, Responsibility, and Effective Communication;
Teaching, advising, and mentoring students holistically from recruitment to completion;
Engaging in shared governance;
Participating in the First-Year Faculty Cohort in the first year of the tenure process.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

Current Washington (WA) State Dental Hygiene License in good standing or eligible to obtain a full license by fall of 2020.
Master’s degree or higher in a related discipline, or ability to earn the degree prior to the awarding of tenure.
Minimum five years of clinical practice as a dental hygienist.
Certified in CPR as a Healthcare Provider with defibrillator.
Consent to and pass a criminal history background check prior to start of employment.
Hold a HIPPA, Suicide Prevention and HIV training certificate or obtain within first month of hire.
Ability to lift items weighing up to 30 pounds.
Ability to demonstrate and complete any and all clinical skills as per the WA State RCW 18.29 and WAC Chapter 246-815 governing the practice of dental hygiene.
Provide proof of vaccination history as per the CDC Recommendations for Healthcare Providers and provide a TB test result as per current standards.
Obtain Washington State professional/technical certification within the first year of employment.

Terms of Employment:

This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 174 contracted days per year with the tenure process starting in September 2020, and the requirement to start in July 1, 2020 or earlier. The 174 day contract length will be any combination of three consecutive quarters from July 1st through June 30th. Assignment may include district discipline/program coordination, as well as evening, hybrid, and/or online teaching. This is a District position with a “home” campus assignment. Initial placement of this position will be at the Fort Steilacoom campus. Candidates will be working for a District Dean and will be required to attend district meetings as well as collaborate with colleagues across the district and across departments.

Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time faculty salary schedule and is dependent upon education and experience. Salary placement for newly hired full-time faculty will be at one of five levels based upon qualifications including teaching experience and credentials. The five levels range from $53,377 to $57,825 per 174-day academic year. Opportunities for summer employment and other assignments are in addition to the base salary.
