Changes to the theme include:

  • header image is smaller 1000px x 150px
  • header spacing has been compacted
  • new thinline Evergreen branding at top
  • Evergreen Footer

All newly created sites will get this theme as the default. If you’d like to use this theme on an existing site, look for Evergreen Twenty Eleven in Appearance > Themes.

How does it work?

  • The first time a page is requested it is dynamically generated and served up, a cache file is then also created and stored. The second time the same page is requested the cached version will be served up.
  • Cached pages are only served out to unauthenticated users. If you’re logged into blogs.evergreen.edu you will get the most up-to-date dynamically generated page.
  • Cached files are only kept for one hour after which time they expire and must be regenerated if requested.
  • This is all made possible by the WP Super Cache plugin.

Why did we do this?

  • WordPress takes a heavy toll on servers as it has to dynamically create each page (php + database) each time it is requested
  • Caching generates a static html page that is much faster to serve up

This was a major upgrade and affected many plugins and themes. If your site does not appear to be working like it used to you may need to:

  • reactivate your plugins
  • change themes (especially if your site is showing the white screen of nothingness)
  • custom CSS missing? We can retrieve it, just ask. If you’re feeling adventurous you can also try to view it yourself at blogs.evergreen.edu/yourblog/files/themes/yourthemename_style.css
  • Mandigo theme has not been updated to work under WordPress 3, we’ll re-enable this theme as soon as the theme developer has fixed the theme

It may be a bit bumpy for the next week as we work out the WordPress3 kinks but please email us if you have questions or run into something that just seems wrong.
