Midweek Thoughts…

I am currently at the computer lab at school and I am on my lunch break for Thursday’s session. We watched a film for the second half of class about types of farms and watching it raised a lot of thoughts and ideas especially since prior to the film, we heard from a guest speaker, Pam, about the idea of food security and food justice. I have always been interested in the idea of food and where I am getting my food from and living in a sustainable way so I could really engage well with this lecture. The film made me feel very motivated and willing for change, but on the other hand, the film made me feel sad and disheartened with what is going on. A big majority of the United States are turning a blind eye about their food production until a new disease outbreak pops up and even then they only care long enough until it disappears from their Facebook feeds.

I had to pause mid thought yesterday because I was going to be late to the second part of class. Now I am really trying to narrow down my research for my blog project but I am having a hard time with my blog topic. I thought I wanted to write about living sustainably but as I was listening to the lecture/workshop on how to research, I couldn’t stop thinking about butterflies. I know I may just be daydreaming about them but it got me thinking about my blog and how much fun it would be to learn about butterflies and how I wanted to go to school to study butterflies and this may be a good chance! I found that the topic of living sustainably was very simple and not easy but it didn’t take a lot of hard work to find articles already written on it. I really want to push myself and make this blog a challenge and learn some new things that I maybe wouldn’t learn in this class; something that I was really passionate about.

Week One Of Winter Quarter IES!

I would describe this past week of school as fluid.

I say this because as I transition from the problems I was facing in the fall quarter, I already feel more motivated and excited to be working on my schoolwork.

The assignments that I was working on this week were Chapter 3 in the ecology text book, a seminar on How Chang Happens, and an assignment on getting more comfortable with popular science writings.

I enjoyed our seminar this week because the book was really enjoyable to read and we had the opportunity to go over our blog ideas and I came up with a really good base for my blog which I didn’t think I had in me. It was also really interesting to hear where all of my classmates thoughts were on their blog ideas.

The chapter in the ecology book that we had to read was pretty understandable considering I remember learning about biomes in biology my sophomore year in  high school. I still enjoyed learning about them because I find the subject really interesting. I struggled with my homework on this assignment though because I had written in my notebook so I have to type it out and still turn it in.

I had a hard time with the popular science writing homework because I was kind of confused about what I was supposed to do exactly but after we discussed it in class on Friday and did the workshop on talking to other students about it, it turned out to be one of my favorite parts of class this week.

Overall, there are some things that I need to work on for this upcoming week like figuring out my timing when I get to school and when assignments are due and when they are turned in. Other than those things, I feel like I am staying organized and pushing through the urge to just stay home and sleep which is a big step from last quarter. Hopefully I can keep it up while moving forward with my goals.
