Snow More School!

Well, the quarter is officially over! I had my evaluation conference, which went quite well! And now I am able to just kick back and relax for about a week before I go home for the holidays. And just to help usher in the holiday season, Mother Nature decided to sprinkle a few inches of snow on this town that is so unaccustomed to the white fluffy powder. It was a beautiful day today, cold but cheery. It really upped my holiday spirit.

My final class project, building a bench out of recycled materials, was a big success! Everyone produced such unique creative responses to the assignment. My bench, which i will later post a picture of, is made out of scrap wood bridged over two large truck tires. My professors liked it, as did most of the people who have sat on it. Now it is on my front porch, covered in snow.

Fall quarter really worked me hard, but I am ready to relax and then get back on the horse for what sounds like a really exciting winter quarter. I am staying with the class, and we are going to focus more on techniques for developing sustainable architecture, and also start moving forward on some projects that may actually be built on campus or in the community. It s going to be awesome!

So until then, have a wonderful winter holiday season! See you again in 2009!

Intense!

Well, now I know what it is like to stay up for 36 hours and then sleep for 16.

I pulled an all-nighter the other day to finish a class project. Then I just crashed.

The project (which I left to the last minute) was for us to do a building “program”, which is a paper that includes all the things to consider when designing a new building; then we had to do three schematic designs showing how the building will be laid out and some sketches of what the building might look like. The building I was designing was a sawmill and wood drying site that will eventually be built here at Evergreen. Our class projects are often relevant and have the potential to actually be physically realized, which is so awesome! Projects like these also give you a greater appreciation for all the work that goes into designing buildings we use everyday, and makes you notice when and where people just did not put in any time or thought to how they will look and function. I felt really good about my design, and I wish I had started earlier so I could’ve put even more thought into it.

At the same time, each person in our class has been designing a bench to be made out of recycled materials, which has proven to quite a challenge. I’m building mine out of scrap wood and old tires. I’ll post a picture of it when I finish it.

The weather has been fair lately, providing some sunny but chilly days, with great vistas of Mt. Rainier while I wait for the bus in the morning.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

I’ll talk to ya soon!

p.s. I have a mustache now.
