I’m V. L. Emmerson, a visual artist and filmmaker based in the Pacific Northwest.

Art Life

Ever since I was little, creating in some way was a key factor in my life. From writing countless short stories to scribbling half-figures on any scrap of paper I found to amateur photography on a disposable camera and so on, I refused to be deterred from making. As my life went on, it became not just a way to have fun but a way to survive. It was an outlet to channel emotions, process thoughts, and make statements.

Art in all its forms is the most important thing in my life and, I believe, in the world. It is about expressing something, and that takes many shapes, both abstract and representational. Art includes visual works (2D and 3D), photography, dance, music, theatre, film, fashion, food, and more – just about anything can be art, I think, if you let yourself tap into different perspectives and see it that way.

When I create, I chase the strange, macabre, and beautiful, with its veneration in mind. I make a lot of work, and I think it’s safe to say most of it could classify as “a little weird”. There’s certainly nothing wrong with a little bit of darkness; after all, life is full of such things. I’ve found that sometimes it takes absurdity to keep perspective – my fun little way of reminding myself (and hopefully others) not to take everything too seriously all the time.

My deepest hope and goal for my creations is twofold: to celebrate differences, and to also transcend those, touching on themes and emotions common to humanity and life at large. Recognizing and cheering our individual and cultural differences across the globe is beyond important, and I hope to reflect this in my work. Now more than ever though, the world could use a reminder of our deeper threads, our human connections. In our lives we all chase separate goals, but it’s also key to remember that some of those are common to us all. I believe we are all seeking, to some level, the same things: a little bit of happiness, and a little bit of peace.

Personal Life

I was born in Oklahoma, raised in Texas, and moved with my family to the Olympia-Lacey area of Washington right before my 12th birthday. It was rough at first, but over time I’ve found a rainy home here among the moss and forests. I attended North Thurston High School, active mainly in the visual and performing arts departments. When it came time to form a post-high school plan, I found everything I could’ve wanted in The Evergreen State College. I’m committed to being the best geoduck I can be!

I have a few hobbies that aren’t purely arts-based in nature. Reading has always been a big pastime of mine, and I enjoy a good video game from time to time, too. I’m also a casual collector of assorted objects, including rocks, bottles, erasers, and postcards – basically anything that strikes my fancy. When I’m not working on art or classwork, I enjoy haunting downtown Oly, practicing my violin, or taking photos of our family zebra finches, Beeps and Nougat.
