APPLICATION FOR MEDIA ARTISTS STUDIO 2009-2010

IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN MEDIA ARTISTS STUDIO 2009-2010:

Laurie and Beatriz will be available for questions via e-mail (Laurie Meeker office: Com 308F, meekerl@evergreen.edu, ext. 6890; Beatriz Flores Gutiérrez, office:  Com 359, floresgb@evergreen.edu, ext. 5531, and at the Academic Fair on Wednesday, May 13th, 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., CRC gymnasium.

 To apply for Media Artists Studio, provide the information and answers requested below along with a DVD with two completed work samples, and deliver it by the priority deadline – 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 14h – to Program Secretary Carolyn Raines (Com-303A) or Cindy Fry (Com-302B). 

¨     We will be looking at your portfolios with two of your best media works by May 14th, please make sure your DVD’s menus work properly.  You can submit two short pieces, or excerpts of longer works up 10 minutes maximum for each piece.   Please include your name, an  artist statement for each piece, TRT (Total Running Time), and completion date.

 WE WILL E-MAIL ACCEPTED AND WAIT-LISTED STUDENTS BY 8 A.M. MONDAY, MAY 21st.  Before you can register, students accepted into Media Artists Studio must contact one of the Program Secretaries (ext. 6605) to enter a faculty signature override (using your student ID number) into the Banner system.  If you do not intend to take the program, please let us know by e-mail as soon as possible.  If you do not register for the program, your place will be given to someone on the wait-list.  Wait-listed students:  let us know of your continuing interest, and leave us a phone number and e-mail address where you can be contacted.

APPLICATION

¨     Your name, student ID number, phone number and e-mail address.

¨     Your status as of September 2009 (junior or senior) and the number of credits you expect to have by that time.

¨     Evergreen students:  Please list all Evergreen programs you have taken.  Include two faculty evaluations of you from Mediaworks or/and other coordinated studies program(s) (i.e., a full-time interdisciplinary program taught by two or more faculty).  This should be a program that you took in the past year, if possible.

¨     Entering transfer students:  Submit a transcript and two letters of recommendation that speak to the quality of your academic work and your media, and critical thinking skills.

¨     Please write answers to the questions below.  Respond thoughtfully.  Admission to the program is based on critical reading and writing skills evident in your answers and on the quality of your previous academic work, as demonstrated in your evaluations, transcript or letters of recommendation, as well as on your vision for a major media project you might undertake in MAS this year.

1.     In one paragraph, discuss your artistic and intellectual background, including coursework, and explain the relevance of this background to Media Artists Studio.  In a second paragraph explain how have you incorporated theory and praxis in your most recent work.

2.     The Media Artists Studio learning community will emphasize cooperative and collaborative creative experiences.  Your decision to participate in the program should reflect your understanding and acceptance of this approach to learning media.  Take a page to answer these questions:  What does the phrase “learning community” mean to you and what specific qualities, life experiences, academic interests and/or skills would you be able to contribute to our learning community?  How do you expect that being in this learning community might shape your understanding and practice of media?  How do you learn from other people’s work?  What are the skills and behaviors that make for successful collaborations?  How do you learn? 

3.     Take a page to tell us about one or two of the creative media works that have inspired you.  What do you think were the ideas that the artist/s were responding to when they made it?  What aspects of the work inspire you the most?  How is it similar to or different from projects you have done, or might undertake? 

4.     In one paragraph, tell us how you deal with visual or written texts that you don’t agree with or that otherwise challenge your comfort zone.

5.  In one paragraph describe a project you might produce in Media Artists Studio next year.
