OLYMPIA, Wash. – Suiting up just seven players for the second straight night, the Evergreen Geoducks nearly collected their first conference win of the season, falling to the Concordia Cavaliers, 67-58, in a Cascade Conference men’s basketball game on Saturday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
The contest stayed tight over the first part of the opening half until a 23-1 run put Concordia (14-11, 6-8 CCC) up by 12 at 24-12. The Cav lead remained in double-digits for the remainder of the period as the Geoducks (1-23, 0-15 CCC) went into the break down by 16 points, 43-27.
Evergreen came out of the locker room ready to go in the second half as Concordia found their lead shrunk to just seven points midway through the final half. Evergreen cut the gap to six on a free throw by Marcus Buren (Federal Way, Wash./Thomas Jefferson HS) with 58 seconds left but the Geoducks couldn’t quite complete the comeback, falling 67-58 to visiting Concordia.
The Geoducks were led by 16 points from Elzie Dickens III (Seattle, Wash./Highline CC), who also added 14 rebounds on the night. Senior Patrick Lewis (Bremerton, Wash./Olympic College) put up 12 points and 15 rebounds to collec the double-double while Buren and Mike DeRosier (Puyallup, Wash./South Puget Sound CC) each added 11 in the losing effort. Senior Larry Green (Seattle, Wash./Grays Harbor CC) brought down 14 rebounds as the Geoducks had three players with double-digit rebounds as Evergreen held a 53-46 advantage on the glass.
Concordia was led by 22 points and 11 rebounds from Kevan West. Jourdan Sweeney put up 18 points for the Cavs while Anthony Holton and Marquis Matthews each scored 11 in the win. The Cavaliers held court in the pain, collecting 42 of their 67 points in the lane.
The Geoducks head south next Friday for a meeting with second-ranked Oregon Tech. Tip with the Owls is set for 7:30pm on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls, Ore.
