OLYMPIA, Wash. – After being shutout in each of their first two matches of the season, the Evergreen Geoducks went on the offensive against the Walla Walla Wolves, defeating their guests, 3-0, in a non-conference men’s soccer match on Tuesday afternoon on a sun-drenched Geoduck Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
The Geoducks (1-2) didn’t wait long to get on the scoreboard as Jack Fortune (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS) found the end of a pass from Corey Johnson (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) as Fortune powered the ball past Walla Walla (1-3) keeper Jonathan McLane for the 1-0 lead.
Evergreen made it 2-0 at the 66 minute mark as Johnson scored a goal of his own to double the Geoduck advantage. A foul in the box in the 75th minute gave the green and white a chance to make it 3-0 on a penalty kick and junior George Bundy (Enumclaw, Wash./Enumclaw HS) converted as Evergreen picked up the three-goal victory.
Freshman Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) was solid in net, making two saves on seven Walla Walla shots to earn his first collegiate shutout. The Geoducks outshot the Wolves, 16-7, on the afternoon and showed a strong desire to score goals, being whistled four times for offsides.
The Geoducks will open up Cascade Conference play next Tuesday when they make the trek to Caldwell, Idaho to take on College of Idaho.
