Lauren’s Spring Quarter Production

editing and editing

I’ve done a lot of editing this week.  Color correction has been a little challenging on some parts, the parts that I filmed at Byron’s house turned out with really weird levels.  I think the sun kept going behind a cloud because in a lot of the shots the exposure will start out fine but then gets too dark by the end.  So basically I’ve been hacking the clips up into tiny parts and color correcting for the changes as they happen.  Which is very time consuming.  Also, I don’t know where the last shot of the film went so I’m going to have to look on the tapes for it and if I can’t find it I guess I’ll just have to reshoot it.  I’m not too worried about it because it’s a pretty short and uncomplicated little two second blip, but I do need it.   Next week I’m going to finish the narration and put it into the edit.  I also need to find some tango music for the second half.  I’ve been looking on royalty free websites but a lot of them are expensive and I haven’t found a track I’m in love with yet. Last week’s affinity group meeting went well.  We discussed progress in our projects, Ben read his narration, and we watched American Movie.  I’m hoping to bring a rough cut next Thursday. Overall I’d say I’m on track to finishing the project.  I should have a rough cut done by at least Friday and I can’t really see the final edit taking much longer since I’ve already done so much work with color correction for the rough cut.  The project is really coming along, I’m just really excited to see what it’s like with the narration because it’s going to give it a lot different of a feel than the footage without audio I have right now.  That’s all for today, and good luck with your projects, mediaworkers!

oh boy, things are going well!

Wow, I can’t believe I’ve actually gotten so much done this week.  Filming has been going great and I’m almost done.  I’m still having a little trouble with the last scene though, because I need to put someone behind the cash register in a store that looks like it could sell a ball and it’s proving a bit difficult.  Luckily it’s only one short scene and it’s all I have left shooting wise.

I’m feeling really positive about the project so far.  I set out to make a film about community bonding and connection and I was a little concerned about asking the favor of participation from people that I wouldn’t normally count on.  One of the most uncomfortable aspects about film for me is that it’s so reliant on other peoples’ time and help and dedication and lets face it- sometimes they don’t always come through.  I’m also just still somewhat shy about asking anything of anyone making a film, right down to “Would it be okay if I filmed here?” If it wouldn’t make such a boring film I would be just as happy to get lost behind Evergreen filming long stills of trees all day long.  This project is helping me overcome that a little, though. I have asked the help of people that I would normally never think of asking favors from, like a student at my dojo I don’t have class with so I don’t talk to much, and the woman I tutor, and my cousin I haven’t really talked to since he had a kid six years ago.  I thought maybe one of those three would reluctantly agree to be in my film, but all of them were completely onboard with the project and overwhelmingly happy- even excited, to help me.  The process of making this film has turned out to be exactly what the film is about in the first place, people of diverse backgrounds being connected and coming together, and I really couldn’t be happier about it.

significantly less to do, also, the origin story

Now I have to:
  • Confirm store
  • Confirm shooting times
  • Confirm with Byron, Cailin
  • Email Aiye with specifics
I’d kind of like to watch Que Tan Lejos again for a little inspiration before I start shooting.  I’d post a link of it or something but there’s not really a point since there’s no distributor for it up here and apparently the copy my friend sent me is only in Spanish.  So I guess let me know if you speak Spanish and want to watch it and we’ll screen it together.
Other than that I guess my thinking process for this is pretty much finished, now I’m just a date and time confirming machine.  I’m starting to wonder where this project really came from in the first place.  I had that weird movement idea that I wasn’t really into in the first place and really wasn’t much of an idea because I hadn’t planned much for it besides “people… moving.”  And then the day before our first affinity group meeting I called Ben and freaked out because I didn’t have any idea what I was going to present and I said something to the effect of “I like the idea of people being connected… How about I make a movie about a bunch of people that are connected and list random facts about them.”  And so was born this project.  It’s weird because I have all of these things that it means to me now, and must have meant to me at the point that I belched it out, but I had never really thought about putting those opinions into artistic form pre belch.  I guess it has been like that with most of my projects that have meant anything to me though, the feministy one I had no real plans for until Laurie’s writing workshop and all of a sudden I knew exactly what to make the film about.  Also with “And a Very Merry Documentary” I had no intention of making it have any sort of political overtones until about halfway through filming and it’s still one of my favorites.  Marilyn asked me to think about my creative process and I guess… I’m not exactly sure how to put this, but it seems like I don’t really meditate on films or feelings I want to put into a film until it all comes at once just in the nick of time.  Convenient.  I hope it keeps working that way.

Done and Less Done

okey dokey.  So, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment and like I don’t really have time for a blog post, but that’s probably because I need to do some planning… on my blog post.  Let’s start with what I’ve done:

  • Budget
  • Activity grant application form
  • Proposal narrative
  • Production schedule
  • Media request form
  • Shot list
  • More general plans
  • Booked Maria’s time
  • Booked Aiye’s time
  • Booked dad’s time
  • Asked dad to find me a store

Now I need to:

  • Finish annotated bibliography
  • Ask two classmates to be in my film
  • Ask classmates to help me crew
  • Confirm store
  • Confirm shooting times
  • Confirm with Byron, Cailin, 2 classmates
  • Email Aiye with specifics
  • Help Maria with her 15 facts
  • Put in an aps form
  • Go to my project proposal meeting tomorrow
  • Email Marilyn this url
  • Ask the library if I can film there
  • Find at least one person that can crew for me at the library and for Aiye’s part

That’s all for now, I have to get back to writing the bibliography.
