Take a ride through the Japanese city of Kobe and surrounding
Kansai region with photographer and Evergreen faculty member Bob Haft. In this
series titled “Omiyage” which are what the Japanese traditionally call the
souvenir gifts which are given to friends and family, Haft brings a series
portraying the “Daily visual gifts” he received while living in Japan as an
Exchange Faculty at the University of Hyogo in Kobe.

Born and raised in Walla Walla, Haft bought a second-hand box-style camera in the late
1960s. While shooting with that camera, he became hooked on making photographs.
Since then Haft has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and South America. He
later earned an MFA in photography from Washington State University, and has
been teaching at Evergreen since 1979. To quote Pete Sinclair, one of Haft’s long time friends and
colleagues, “Photographer Bob Haft is one of the less-than-one-percent
of folks who’s visual acuity is sharp enough to see the blue and red at the
edges of the moon’s light spectrum.”
