Light Painting

For those who aren’t familiar with the process of light painting, I’d like to explain a bit about how it works.

Light painting is a long exposure photographic technique. On an SLR camera, this is accomplished by opening the shutter for an extended period of time in a dark area, and illuminating areas of the image using lighting sources such as flashlights. Anything that is illuminated will show up in the image, while dark areas stay black. Since the camera cannot see anything when the scene is unlit, you can change the subject and lighting mid-shot to achieve a controlled multiple-exposure.

This enables the potential for a seemingly limitless amount of interesting effects that can all be accomplished in-camera with no need for photo manipulation software. I will be posting more examples of light painting in both still and video form to demonstrate what can be accomplished with this fascinating technique.
