Assessment Plans for 2012-13 are coming in and it’s exciting to see what colleagues have planned to explore this academic year.  For example, the Children’s Center student employees provided feedback last year about the level of support and training received and the Center staff are instituting a revised training program in response, which will be assessed in turn, in an effort to continue providing quality care AND provide a quality student employment experience.

By the year 2050, the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population in the United States is expected to more than double, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Recent reports indicate that more AAPI students are experiencing difficulties attaining academic success in colleges and universities than in the past. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Higher Education: Research and Perspectives on Identity, Leadership, and Success presents a compilation of statistical reports, research findings, and experiential accounts that counters the lack of information about this population. In 2010-11 some basic building blocks were established in key areas including operations plans, student employment, program offerings, and implementation of an advisory board. The 2010 Student Voice Survey indicated mind/body offerings, outdoor pursuits and a ropes course were significant areas of interest for expansion. Yoga, Tai Chi and Stretch/De-stress classes have become our core course offerings as a result. The outdoor pursuit demand has been responded to in the rebuilding of The Outdoor Program. Submitted by Michael Sledge, Assistant Director for Residential Life and Co-Chair, Student Affairs Assessment Initiative

I think it’s safe to say that student affairs practitioners rarely get into our specific line of work because of our love for assessment – it’s much more likely that we are motivated by our desire to work with students directly and that we draw our satisfaction from interaction, dialogue and support. I came to appreciate assessment relatively recently, only after seeing how it is a key component in helping us assist students and how, when done well, it can elevate the work we all do. Imagine surfing facebook and finding a string of comments talking about all the horrible things you supposedly represent and how terrible your leadership style supposedly is. Picture looking for a student’s photography blog and finding a web page devoted to discussing their sexual history and a ranking of their sexual prowess. Visualize being an 18-year old new student who – after a night of partying and taking some silly pictures – is branded a sexist or homophobe all across campus because of a “funny” gesture they made in front of a camera. At any college, Academic Advising always has a strong connection both to Student Services and to Academics, and that is especially true at Evergreen. Working closely with the Academic Deans and the Registrar, we make it a priority to know and understand the details of the ever-changing curriculum and our faculty’s  interests and teaching styles, as well as the whys and hows of the Evergreen educational models, so that we can be good guides for students as they plan their academic pathways. We have the opportunity to work with talented students who might not be fully aware of the possibilty of a career in student affairs.   October is  Careers in Student Affairs Month (CSAM).  This provides a unique chance to invest in the future of our profession. NASPA President, Patricia Telles-Irwin writes, “As you know, a career in student affairs is largely an unknown option to students as they enter college. It is not until they experience exciting learning opportunities organized by student affairs staff and get to know the diverse and gifted persons engaged in student affairs that they consider whether the field might have promise for them personally.” Read the rest of this entry »
