Thanks to all the offices and individuals who helped make our commencement activities happen. The transformation of the campus embodies the work of many. Along with new student orientation, graduation is one of the “bookends” of the student experience at Evergreen and probably the most likely to be remembered. It remains a real team effort, resulting in a terrific celebration for our graduates, their family and friends and the entire campus.

Submitted by Matt Newman, Director of Recreation and Athletics
Our goals in Recreation & Athletics center around providing healthy and competitive programming for Evergreen’s students, faculty, and staff. We try to accomplish this with the CRC (e.g., pool, weight and cardio rooms, activity classes, and gymnasium and fields), through our Outdoor and Intramurals programs, and with Club and Intercollegiate Sports. Sometimes we’re very successful doing these things, and sometimes we’re not. I imagine all of us in Student Affairs can relate to the highs and lows that come with our daily work. Managing narrative academic records for posting credit and processing official transcripts isn’t easy with over 60,000 files at an average 50 pages each file. It just got easier as of last April when the final paper evaluation was scanned ending 40 years of managing paper academic records. It all began five years ago when Registration and Records staff began imaging all active students’ files with the goal of a more paperless process. Read the rest of this entry »

In 2010-11 some basic building blocks were established in key areas including operations plans, student employment, program offerings, and implementation of an advisory board. The 2010 Student Voice Survey indicated mind/body offerings, outdoor pursuits and a ropes course were significant areas of interest for expansion. Yoga, Tai Chi and Stretch/De-stress classes have become our core course offerings as a result. The outdoor pursuit demand has been responded to in the rebuilding of The Outdoor Program. Submitted by Michael Sledge, Assistant Director for Residential Life and Co-Chair, Student Affairs Assessment Initiative
I think it’s safe to say that student affairs practitioners rarely get into our specific line of work because of our love for assessment – it’s much more likely that we are motivated by our desire to work with students directly and that we draw our satisfaction from interaction, dialogue and support. I came to appreciate assessment relatively recently, only after seeing how it is a key component in helping us assist students and how, when done well, it can elevate the work we all do.
