Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time and modeling climate a critical part of studying climate change. Climate science involves building models, making predictions, and collecting data, and modeling climate change also involves computer science and mathematics – and might require new techniques since the problems are not only new and difficult, but computationally very demanding (i.e., requiring very fast computers or very many computers).
The Modeling Climate Change Lectures, funded by the Evergreen PLATO Royalty Fund, will bring together faculty, students, and members of the local community interested in the challenges involved in modeling climate change. Three Evergreen programs will participate:
Each program’s seminar will involve the lecture series. The lecture series will also be open on a space available basis for two or four credits to other students; graduate credit is available as well.
Lectures will be held in LH1.

This event is a public forum to discuss future alternative transportation options with the Evergreen community sponsored by the Greener Commuter Program.
Dennis Bloom (Planning Manager at Intercity Transit) is going to talk about the rising prices of transit and why the bus pass increased from $240 to $360 this year.
Then we will have a presentation by the Student Coordinator of Alternative Transportation about the possibilities of:
-A carshare program
-A bikeshare program
-A student passport program
Finally there will be a survey about campus reaction to these programs and questions about the way the campus feels about current parking prices.
Join us in the Library Lobby (2nd floor).

The Clean Energy Committee has received a proposal to support the construction of a biomass gasification system for clean energy production on campus.
The committee will be conducting a forum this Friday, October 16, to educate the public on the current status and goals of the Clean Energy Committee and discuss the gasification project proposal.
If you are curious to see how clean energy dollars are being spent and would like your voice to be heard, please come to the forum:
Any questions, please contact Dani at cleanenergy@evergreen.edu.

A Peak Moment interview with ecopsychologist Sarah Edwards explaining the stages people often go through when facing the implications of climate change and resource depletion. How can we deal with a brain that evolved to respond to the saber-toothed tiger but not to more distant problems like climate change or resource depletion? Let’s talk about it.

Join 350 families on the Chehalis-Western Trail biking and walking as a public witness for climate change action in International Climate Change Action Day. Our October 24th event in Thurston County is one of hundreds across this country and the world – our call for governmental leaders to address the global climate crisis by adopting carbon dioxide emission limits of 350 parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere.
Pump up your bike tires or lace up your sneakers and be one of 350 families on the Chehalis-Western Trail at 10 am. Participants are urged to come from all directions to the trail – south, north, east and west – riding from your homes, or parking lots near the trail’s many entry points. Our goal is to minimize car traffic and parking at any one point.
More information on the local event can be found HERE.

People around the world respond to the crisis of climate change, focusing on 350 ppm, the safe upper limit for atmospheric CO2. Timing of this call for awareness is critical to rally the world behind solutions before the December meeting in Copenhagen.
