Partner Profile

Liesl Plomski
Graduate Assistant, MES Program
The Evergreen State College

A native of Shelton, Washington, where the Olympic Mountains spill into South Puget Sound, Liesl assists the Sustainable Prisons Project while obtaining a Master of Environmental Studies at Evergreen. Always on the go, she provides essential support for our science-in-prison projects, working closely with inmates and correctional staff who raise frogs, bees and prairie plants with visiting scientists. With Evergreen bachelor’s degrees in ecology and environmental studies, Liesl worked three years on restoration projects for Washington State agencies before returning to the college as a graduate student. Today, when not counting wayward crickets or fixing heaters in the frog tank, Liesl is exploring a thesis to map the biodiversity of prison environs and to identify opportunities for inmates to conserve the plants and wildlife that share their neighborhood.

Above: Graduate students learn valuable leadership skills while working for the Sustainable Prisons Project. Here, Liesl Plomski checks on the progress of Oregon spotted frogs in the rearing tanks at Cedar Creek.
