Sophos Go Live!

I’m pleased to announce that we are going live with Sophos Anti-Virus! This post will provide information on how you can upgrade to Sophos and what you can expect from the process depending on the type of computer you have. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact our Help Desk (, 360.867.6627).

PC desktop/laptop, on-campus
Windows XP/7: We will be pushing Sophos out to your computer. The install process does not require a computer restart and you can continue working while the process runs through.
The install process will start automatically the next time you log in to your computer. You will see a black text window (see Figure A) that will remain open while the install runs. NOTE: This process will not work if the person logged on to the machine is not an administrator. At the end of the process you will see a Windows Security Alert box (see Figure B). Select the ‘Unblock’ option. Congratulations- you now have Sophos Anti-Virus on your computer!

Campus Wireless Updated

Aruba replacement complete for campus (all HP’s and Cisco’s are gone).  These new access points provide much better granular access to reporting, it allows us to know where bottlenecks are, throughput rates and density issues.  Network Services will provide windows into this data for the two helpdesks to look at this information to help users with problems.  All access points are monitored and up.  Wireless is better now then it has ever been. Slightly different antennae which changed some of the signal patterns, but overall it’s as good if not better than before. Continue reading

Academic Computing will be doing a limited pilot project this spring that will evaluate the utilities and fit with Evergreen’s online needs. Stay tuned for updates on this and please feel free to let us know your thoughts!
