Table of Learning Objectives and Activities

Look closely at the relationship between taste and sound – do the two bring one from the present to the past, or evoke emotions such as nostalgia, euphoria or even anger? How does the term “RASA” play into this? Can the word “terroir” be applied to music in the place of food? Is food something that can be categorized with the arts because of the emotional and creative aspects? | Visit places I have previously been to in New Orleans, listen to local music while eating traditional foods of the culture I will be immersed in. Read the RASA chapter in The Taste Culture Reader. | I will make a movie documenting my experiences, as well as keep my website updated with current discoveries and works in progress. |
Does the relationship between elements of staying healthy physically with staying healthy mentally connect with things like music and other forms of expression? How does that change based on culture and location? | Speak with ethnomusicologists, read The Ethnomusicologist’s Cookbook and other texts relating to my studies. Spend time at Wild Lotus in New Orleans, hopefully intern and speak with employees as well as people who have benefitted from the establishment. | This will all also be documented on my website with some video components. I would like to combine all my learning into one film by the end that ties all of my studies together. |
Are the cultural aspects of music and food intertwined? And if so, how does that help to shape a culture, or lack thereof? How does community and history change the way we appreciate food and music? | Potentially meet with Sean Williams and reach out to Sean Johnson for volunteer opportunities in New Orleans. Experience the city!
Read the books recommended by Sarah about RASA as well as my own research that will evolve during my travels and come together in the weeks upon my return. I will read the book The Gravy: In the Kitchen with New Orleans Musicians by Elsa Hahne and use the guidebook New Orleans: The underground Guide by Michael Patrick Welch |

A possible mini cook book element of my blog based on my favorite dishes and environments I am immersed in during travels. |
