Reinheitsgebot- Beer Purity law
The German Beer Purity Law was instated in 1516. The law states that you can brew beer however you want as long as it has water, hops, barely, and yeast. In Germany, it can only have these things, if you want it categorized as beer. The German Beer Purity Law was appeal in the 1990’s, however is still in practice. It was appeal for the sake of imported “beer”. Other countries weren’t as strict as the Germany.
Barely was used, even though other grains grew there, they didn’t want competition between bread makers and brewers. So bread makers got what they needed for bread and the world got German beer, five hundred years later we still have the same type of beer.
