Auf Wiendersehen Amerika, Hallo Deutschland! (Goodbye America, hello germany)
After weeks of exciment and planning: and a hour in traffic, three hours sitting at SeaTac, a ten hour plane ride, a hour and a half layover, a hour plane ride, and a 45 minute cab ride. I finally got to my home for the next two weeks.
At 9am, Berlin time, or Midnight, Olympia time, my hostel rang with noise. Everyone woke up and I saw at least 4/9 of the people in my room take a swig of beer before turning of their alarms. I thought ” well this is a little strange “, but keep moving on with my day. I realize after I left my room, that maybe it isn’t strange because most of the people in the lobby had a beer as well.
I made my way down the street to get my coffee and observed many people drinking beer in a little café. I looked in every café, convenient store, restaurant, and food stand. Every single one sold beer in one form or another. This interged me. In America, most people are on their way with caffeine in hand. In Germany, people are sitting and drinking beer before I can even get coffee. I feel like beer to Germans is coffee to Americans, just a little pick me up in the morning. This observation has brought me to a new question, when/where is drinking beer socially acceptable?
