I made a “header” image that is actually a background image. Click the image below and it will take you to the full size (1000 pixels wide) to input the URL (http://blogs.evergreen.edu/tesclife/files/2012/03/OtherLibraryBookStackBanner6.png) for.

Go to PageLines Settings –> Design Controls –> Site Background Image (Optional) –> [input the URL for the background image] –> Set background image repeat to “Do not Repeat” –> [do not change vertical position] –> Set Horizontal Image in Percent to “50.”

Now, you’re going to need to change the colors of the header text, etc. so that it shows up against the background image, under “Page Text Colors” (the section beneath where you set up the Site Background image). I set mine like this:

Scroll to the bottom and hit “Save Options.”

And now your personal text for the site is still an active link to the homepage, and will switch to the dark green highlight color set for your links (described in this post).

I also changed the font for my site to Helvetica, Helvetica, Lucida Grande. (Hit Save Options, of course). This is a personal choice, but others might want to know? suuuuuureee. for consistencyyyyy.

Part of why the menu looks like it jumps is because people have local subcategorized menus, which add an arrow to the top menu tab when you’re on that page.

Two fixes:

1)we all make massive menus that include everyone else’s subcategories, making the menu a truly omni menu.

Pro: Omni Menu is a powerful and consistent way to reach everyone’s information

Con: It will take time

2)we all change the little setting option in Headers and Nav that turns off the arrow in the navigation menu, removing the bit that makes the menu “jump”

Pro: Fast and easy to do, does not need maintenance

Con: Less intuitive for the user, makes the menu less useful

A compromise would be to turn off the arrow until everyone finalizes their website designs, then we create the Omni Menu of Doom for each person involved, turn arrows back on, and hopefully never have to touch it again, or at least someone will be an administrator to everything and can maintain it.

A reminder to all Book Torrent site builders:

Make sure that the privacy settings for your site are set to “I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers” by the time you have finished setting up all major components. I should be able to click on any menu item and not have to log in to view your work. My reasoning behind this is that alums will not have evergreen.edu accounts to log in with, and it’s kind of a dick move to restrict their access when we claim to be a resource for students and alumni.

If you need to change that, go into your dashboard to Settings–>Privacy–>first bullet–Save button. This will also fix any problems with linking to each others’ site in the menu.

If you want avatars available for users:

Go to Settings –> Discussion –> scroll to the bit about avatars and give your settings preferences –> Save Changes button. I chose the Identicon because I wanted to see what mine looked like.

If we use avatars, they should probably be set up the same way across all sites (“pages”) for that desired consistency.
