Comparing Estuaries

Billy Frank Jr. VS. Ellis Cove

IMG_8021IMG_7791

Comparing this estuary to Ellis Cove the immediate difference is that of scale, function and age. Meaning, the Nisqually estuary is much larger and functions as a delta and is newly restored as Ellis Cove is not. Looking closer we noticed the mud at Nisqually was more orange and Ellis Cove’s a more grey color. At Nisqually, one has a view of surrounding islands and Nisqually reach. Ellis Cove looks over to Cooper Point with a narrower focus. Nisqually delta/estuary has more landmass and acreage, both are protected areas. “The Locals” were really interested in examining these differences and learning about the ecosystem services estuaries provide.

We also took time to acknowledge the history of each site from the time of pre-colonization. It gave us a renewed sense of respect for our town. Do you like history too?

Overall, this project was incredibly stressful, but that didn’t stop me from becoming immersed in my surroundings and finding the beauty in public parks. I needed this project. It made me work my tail off and get outside during a period when it was hard to get out of bed. I needed to be re-reminded that I live in a ecologically and culturally rich place.

I am really proud of the photos I took at each of the sites. In the curated gallery above I show my best works. It was great to have an opportunity to practice photography outdoors for a week, I think my skills are slowly improving.

And I finally got that date to prom.
