Group Statement

We were each drawn to different themes during this field trip to Rainier. Although they varied they were very intertwined. Geological process, natural life, and humans are large contributors  to this place, and all places in our natural world.

Paradise, Washington

This past winter quarter I went to Mount Rainier weekly. January 4th was the first time I ever recall being. My Dad always promised us skiing or snowboarding trips growing up, but I suppose life got in the way. Therefore seeing the change simply seasonally was pretty shocking. There was snow down to the ranger station in the winter. This spring you had to wait until you were at Paradise, off the parking lot. I was constantly comparing, between the two.  Rainier is a very dynamic place, riddled with change. That being said, it really puts into perspective what massive change could look like. Seeing something so powerful as a snow pack, with so much danger could simply disappear due to an simple seasonal temperature. In the winter the snow felt, still, calm , constant. The spring felt too naturally busy, it felt odd like the meadows took away something I had come to know so well. It was exciting, and devastating simultaneously. That’s a funny feeling.
