Performance & The Textual Body: “Play Within a Field of Constraint”?

Dear All,

Below are the readings for this Weds lecture/discussion as well as part (a small part) of Saturday’s class. Much of this is audo/visual. Please study/read/watch each of these, so that we can be prepared for discussion. The only ones NOT REQUIRED are under ‘Recommended,” and I included these for those of you who can and want to pursue Toscano’s work further, or think thru poetic performance more than we will in class. These readings will carry us into next week (we’ll spend 2 of the last 4 discussion sessions on these).

1) RE-READ (since you’ve already read this in prep for this week) Judith Butler’s Intro to Undoing Gender,”Acting in Concert”

2) kari edwards, excerpt from hir book, IdunaHERE and kari edwards’s short piece in regards border, identity, &: “Subject: Statement” HERE .

3) Rodrigo Toscano, Strikes & Orgies, plus a “Read ‘N’ Shout Poem” HERE (KEEP READING AFTER THE SHORT PROSE PIECE IS FINISHED! THE POEM IS BELOW IT).

4) Rodrigo Toscano, “Eco-Strato-Static,” a poem for two voices HERE (audio recording of the performance) and HERE (text).

RECOMMENDED (of further interest for those who are doing performance work/poetic performance):
