OLYMPIA, Wash.– The Evergreen State women’s basketball team could not find answers in the second half at home against Walla Walla’s Whitman College and eventually lost their fourth game of the season in a 68-46 rout at the CRC gymnasium.
The Geoducks (1-4) got off to a rocky start early as they turned the ball over three times within the first five minutes of the game. However, the Geoducks would find their rythmn as they pulled ahead and led 16-11 midway through the first half and seemed to be running on all cylinders. Whitman (3-1) showed signs of life and pulled forward to tie the game at 28-28 with under five minutes to go in the half. Shavon Tate (Tacoma, Wash. / Tacoma CC) and Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash./ La Sierra University) both hit three pointers at the end of the half to give Evergreen a 34-31 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
Whitman started the second half with a 15-4 run and would never looked back as they eventually extended their lead to 64-40, their biggest of the game. Evergreen was outscored 37-12 in the second half of play. All but two Whitman players scored while the Geoduck faithful were left wondering what happened in the second half.
Whitman’s Rebecca Sexton (Fox Island, Wash. / Gig Harbor HS) led all scorers with 15 points and shot an impressive 7-12 from the floor. Teammate Janele Peterson (Redondo Beach, Cali. / South HS) added 14 points and three rebounds in the victory.
Evergreen sophomore Shekia Hill (Steilacoom, Wash. / Steilacoom HS) had a career game leading the Geoducks with 14 points and six rebounds while Shavon Tate was the only other Geoduck in double digit scoring. Latifa Ward continued her dominance on the boards as she pulled down 10 rebounds. Latrina Woods had nine points and shot 4-5 from the floor.
The Geoducks continue their season next weekend as they begin their conference schedule travelling to Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho next weekend.
