KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – After The Evergreen State College Geoducks shot their way to a 10- point halftime lead, the Oregon Institute of Technology Hustlin’ Owls raised the stakes in the second half, pulling past the Geoducks for the 68-61 win in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night in Klamath Falls, Ore.
In the first half, Oregon Tech (10-10, 2-6 CCC) took the lead very early but once Evergreen (3- 11, 1-6 CCC) found their shooting stroke, the Geoducks used an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the ball game. After OIT briefly took the lead back midway through the period, the Geoducks quickly grabbed it back, using 40.5% shooting to take a 36-26 halftime lead.
Junior Vanessa Caskey (Tacoma, Wash./Pierce CC) was nearly unstoppable in the first half, posting 15 points to lead the Geoduck effort. Evergreen also did a good time cleaning the glass, holding a 26-19 rebound advantage through the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Hustlin’ Owls did their best to battle back, cutting the Geoduck lead to three points with 11:55 left to go and eventually tying the game up with 8:47 left to play. The OIT shooters warmed up in the second half, giving the Owls the lead with 7:01 left to play. Shooting in front of their excited student section, OIT seemingly couldn’t miss in the waning minutes as Evergreen fell on the road, 68-61.
Evergreen was led by the 15 points from Caskey, who was held scoreless in the second half. Danielle Swain (Rainier, Wash./Black Hills HS) recorded the double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman Latifa Ward (Tacoma, Wash./Foss) came off the bench to chip in 11 points while senior Latrina Woods (Skyway, Wash./La Sierra University) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points on the night.
The Geoducks brought down a season-high 44 rebounds on the night, their highest total since bringing down 46 on Nov. 10, 2009 against Saint Martin’s.
Oregon Tech was led by a game-high 17 points from Aundrea Albright. Crissy Watts came off the bench to score 15 and Kassi Conditt had 10 rebounds as the Owls spread their offense around, getting points from nine different players.
The Geoducks return to Olympia next week as they play host to Concordia (Ore.) on Friday night in the back end of Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader. Tip-off with the Cavaliers is set for 7:30 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium.
