Artist’s Statement
Hello, I am Stephanie H.A Ash and currently I am a student at The Evergreen State College. I am fascinated by textures and transformation, which is the main theme of my work as well as my life. I have been many things in my life: a daughter, a wife, a mechanic, a security guard, a designer and a friend. My life is ever-evolving and changing and this is reflected in my artwork.
Shadows define the shape of the individual and give them depth. Shadow and light are two aspects of the same principle, always changing and shifting. It is the endless conjunctions between light and shadow the form the myriad shades of gray that creativity springs from. The shades of gray form a complex and sublime person who is more interesting and vibrant that one of monochrome. Nothing can be seen in either total light or total darkness. It is only by the combination of light and dark to form shadow that we can see form and shape. It is for this reason that I have studied and thought about how shadow and light combine in my art to form new textures and new meanings.
How dark and light combine can change how something looks as well as what it is made out of. I am always experimenting, transforming and changing things, to see understand not only how they are constructed, but how they are viewed. Shadows and light are one way to transform how something looks, the materials are another and our perceptions are the third. I try to keep these three principles in mind in my life and my art.
