I think this novel shows strongly the effects of American foreign policy during the Cold War era, with some parallels to the situation going on in the Middle East right now. The division of people in every which direction seems to be shown, whether it be the conflict between neighbors, the missionaries and traditions, the country and itself, regular people and each other.
