Through doing the writing exercise in the writing workshop this week I got a lot of ideas out that were milling around in my brain and I thought of a structure of how I want my paper to be (subject to change as always).

  1. Talk about food as a place of ethnic identity development. For people in that ethnicity, as a place of safety, getting to talk with people from different generations about identity. For people outside that ethnic group as a way to enter into the culture and think about how they are positioned in society while gaining a new perspective. Also focusing on intersectionality of gender, socioeconomic class, race, disability, sexual orientation, etc.
  2. Food as an invitation to conversation and connection between different communities.
  3. A discussion of cultural authenticity and appropriation
  4. Wrapping all those together to talk about social change and racial reconciliation. And struggling with how to move forward in the conversation.

I am wondering if I should narrow this down to Filipinx/American food and people or keep it broad. I think I will keep it broad, especially because my research is broad but my personal narrative will focus on Filipinx Americans. It’s a little bit overwhelming because there is so much about each specific sub group contained in Asian/American. Well, I am sure that more subjects and points of interest will come into play within this topic, and they already are. Let’s see how this goes!
