week 1–notes on Ghost in the Shell (2017) viewing

notes to self:

  • hanka industry? being mostly white
  • wise old asian guy trope
  • demonization of asian people/culture (+other POC)
-> asian guys in the bar harrassing mira
    ->geisha robot
  • why is mira’s mom asian but she’s white? mira’s not mixed
->explained later w/ appearance of mira’s true self, motoko (played by an asian actress)
  • the white guy leader of the industry constantly talking about “terrorists”
  • the body -> its importance, ability/disability, manipulation + restructure
  • technology = advanced? debatable
->what is can bring to us; what it can take away

discussion notes:

  • references: bladerunner, saving private ryan, yoda (star wars), wild wild west, the matrix, catcher in the rye, fifth element, west world, batman, tron, etc.
  • reality vs illusion
  • consciousness between human and robot -> multiple consciousness
  • coming of age
  • location of filming -> hong kong
->hegemonic view of asian people; erasure
->side note: original film (1995) also based in hong kong (fit the vibe of the movie/film)
  • science fiction films = both about future + present
  • even in fantasy worlds the inequalities of reality still exist <-> tokenism + stereotyping
  • does the anime make more sense?
->what histories are lost in translation, in the reboot?
  • most signs in movie were in chinese
